The first review of the new Model 100 is in.

NSMT Loudspeakers Model 100

A big thank you to Terry London and Six Moons for Terry's review of the Model 100. Can a modestly priced "box" speaker take on the  imaging prowess of the omnidirectional MBL Radialstrahler E101 MKII? We invite you to read here for yourself and to hear the Model 100 and decide for yourself.

Bass performance is the main determinant of the suitability of a speaker for any room size. With its flexible adjustable bass output, the Model 100 easily fits any room. And its low bass prowess and its ability to pressurize any room will shame many speakers with 15 inch woofers.

Terry describes how the Model 100's has the ability to replicate the original time/space of the musical event with a kind of wrap-around holographic immersion that he has only heard in one other speaker: the MBL Radialstrahler E101 MKII.

More recently Terry noted that "...the Model 100s  [is] "mesmerizing" because of the factors that everyone so far has experienced. First, holographic sound-staging, that encompasses you in the music.  Secondly, the purity/beauty of the colors/tonality in the mid-range.  Thirdly, the sheer overall power of the speaker and the deep and accurate killer bass and how it loads the room with sub-sonics that give you a sense of where the recording was made."

We welcome comparisons to any speaker at any price, with regard to bass performance, musicality, imaging, soundstaging, and value.

The New Model 100 is Here!

The new Model 100 is here updated and offered in different finishes.

NSMT Model 100

The latest version of the Model 100 features a repositioned tweeter and a revision of how the tweeter is implemented. The goal is to get the tightest time alignment between the tweeter and the woofer. This significantly improves the Model 100's resolution of micro details and its imaging. In addition, we have improved the regidity of the cabinet by strategically placing stiffners on the internal panels in order eliminate resonances and produce truly boxless sound. Dubbed the Africa speaker, the Model 100 is now offered in Eco-friendly, non-toxic, standard satin black and cherry cabinets and in deluxe all wood natural birch plywood cabinets.

The new Chorus inspired by the Model 50 is here!

NSMT Chorus speaker

"... the Chorus Loudspeakers really beat my Maggies in terms of stereo image."

The new Chorus/Model 25 reflects the summation of what we have learned over the years about delivering large scale dynamics in compact designs.

It is 97 dBs efficient and can be driven by anything from flea watt SET amplifiers to high powered solid state amplifiers. It can out-image the best minimonitors and it can handle any genre from rock to classical to dub reggae.

It is 4.5 inches deep by 37 inches high by 9.5 inches wide (excluding the outriggers). It is designed to complement today's flat screen TVs.

Frequency response: 37 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

What are the major improvements?

For one, the bass response has been vastly improved. It is now very close to that of the Model 50. The Chorus is now freestanding without the need of a speaker stand. The tonal balance has been improved. And the imaging and soundstaging which were always superlative have been improved. Other than its audiophile prowess, the Chorus/Model 25 is a powerful speaker with very impressive bass response that is only 4.5 inches deep (without the outriggers) which makes it an excellent choice as front speakers for today's flat screen TVs. The active version of the Chorus/Model 25 is even more impressive as front home theater speakers. Imagine a complete powerful audiophile HiFi system for $1,795 that has a "subwoofer out" connection if one is needed, into which you can feed your TV audio signal. With WiFi, cell phone app control, and IR remote control. The active Chorus/Model 25 has it all.

Thanks to Terry London and Home Theater Review

NSMT Model 50/Jamaica

Many thanks to Terry London and Home Theater Review for Terry's review of the Model 50/Jamaica. While modern technology has shrunk most consumer electronics, monstrous speakers are still needed to reproduce "live" sound. The Jamaica speaker is a powerful compact speaker designed to replace much larger and more expensive speakers.

We initiated extensive research and many innovative manufacturing processes to bring you a beautiful, powerful, efficient, affordable, compact speaker with the dynamic prowess that allows it to replace much larger speakers. At the same time, the Jamaica speaker checks off every requirement in the holy grail of accurate sound reproduction including being time coherent, minimum phase and a point source.

In addition, it embodies our innovative proprietary Dual Transmission Line (DTL) approach to bass production and our design principle of avoiding using crossovers in the frequency range of the fundamental frequencies of musical instruments and voices. Our DTL design approach allows us to crossover the woofers to the tweeter at 5,500 Hz. This eliminates crossover induced phase anomalities and soundwave discontinuities in the fundamental frequency region.

The efficiency, soundstaging, and dynamic prowess of the Jamaica allows it to be many great speakers rolled into one. It is designed to handle any genre, from Reggae Dub to Classical music and everything in between. Terry's review shows the Jamaica speaker shines brilliantly as a SET speaker even driven by as little as one watt.

Among its comments:

"...the Model 50 produced thunderous bass and never lost its composure at very high listening levels."

"The Model 50 produced a soundstage ...totally transcending the walls of my listening space."

"To think you can get full range extension on the top and bottom and thunderous dynamics with less than four watts at over 100dB sound pressure levels is amazing."

To the question asked on Audiogon.com "...do you have anything negative to say about them? Terry answered, "... no..."

Some people will not believe this level of performance is possible from a speaker of this size and driver configuration and some will miss how great the Jamaica speaker is because of its low price. But sometimes you get more than you pay for.

Terry's review shows the Jamaica speaker punches way above its price and size in looks, performance, and style. It has already outperformed some much larger, more expensive, "reference" speakers. Overtime people will realize how great this speaker is. You are invited to compare it to any speaker.

NSMT-old-Model50

The previous NSM (NSMT) Model 50 was highly regarded. In his 1995 review of the Model 50, Julian Hirsch of Stereo Review had this to say:

"The NSM Model 50, despite its conventional appearance, is not just another conventional column loudspeaker. The goal of its designers was to produce a "compact acoustic suspension system with the bass response of a subwoofer, and the imaging and soundstaging of a minimonitor."

"The Model 50's measured sensitivity was 85 dB, exactly as rated. The room response above a few hundred Hertz was very uniform and smooth, with a variation of only +2.5 dB from 300 Hz to 20 kHz."

"Even at 32 Hz, the output was only 6 or 7 dB below the average midrange level, and (as listening confirmed) it was perfectly audible and usable at that frequency."

"The Model 50's group delay (an indicator of its phase linearity) was among the lowest and most uniform we have measured to date, with a peak-to-peak variation of less than 0.2 millisecond from a few hundred Hertz to 20 kHz."

"All of this suggests that the NSM Model 50 is a very good speaker, which had been apparent from our first listening. How did it sound? For one thing, it was unobtrusive, in the sense that we were never particularly aware that the sound was emanating from those black boxes, even when quite close to one of the speakers."

"I suspect that the NSM speakers were the more "accurate" of the two..., and that its spatial performance was more realistic. I like sonically-unobtrusive speakers that do not call attention to themselves yet give a believable impression of a concert-hall performance. By those criteria, the NSM Model 50 is a great success. Hear it for yourself if you can."

When we ceased production of the Model 50 in 1998 its price was $1,795, which is equivalent to $2,785 today. Today we are introducing the Model 50/Jamaica, a very worthy successor to the original Model 50 at an introductory promotional price of $1,795. We will make subsequent price increases until we reach $2,785, the equivalent price of the original Model 50.
